The autologous inactivated whole HIV-1 pulsed dendritic cell vaccine is an investigational cell-based therapeutic vaccine designed to treat chronic HIV-1 infection. The vaccine is produced by isolating monocyte-derived dendritic cells (MD-DCs) from an HIV-infected individual and pulsing them ex vivo with the patient's own (autologous) HIV-1 that has been heat-inactivated. This personalized approach aims to present the full spectrum of the individual's viral antigens to their immune system. Once re-administered, these mature dendritic cells act as potent antigen-presenting cells, stimulating HIV-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T-cell responses to improve viral control. Clinical trials, such as the DCV-2 study (NCT00402142) led by researchers at the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, have demonstrated that the vaccine can induce a significant, albeit modest, reduction in plasma viral load during analytical treatment interruption.
