Overview

Autologous infrapatellar fat pad-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (FP-MSCs) is an investigational cell therapy being developed by The Methodist Hospital Research Institute for the treatment of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. The therapy involves harvesting mesenchymal stromal cells from the patient's own infrapatellar fat pad during ACL reconstruction surgery. These cells are then cultured and expanded ex vivo before being reintroduced into the patient's knee joint via a single intra-articular injection approximately 21 days post-surgery. The mechanism of action relies on the regenerative and immunomodulatory properties of MSCs, which secrete bioactive factors to promote tissue healing, reduce inflammation, and potentially enhance the integration of the ACL graft.
