An experimental autologous cell therapy for Parkinson's disease developed by Dr. Jeffrey S. Schweitzer at Massachusetts General Hospital and Dr. Kwang-Soo Kim at McLean Hospital. The therapy involves the use of patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) that are differentiated in vitro into midbrain dopaminergic progenitor cells. These cells are then surgically transplanted into the patient's putamen to replace the dopaminergic neurons that degenerate in Parkinson's disease. Because the cells are derived from the patient's own tissue, the therapy is designed to avoid immune rejection and the need for long-term immunosuppression. A Phase I pilot study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2020 demonstrated that the cells could be safely implanted and showed evidence of survival and clinical stabilization.
