Autologous iPSC-derived RPE is an experimental cell therapy developed by Beijing Tongren Hospital for the treatment of refractory age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The therapy involves generating induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from a patient's own somatic cells, which are then differentiated into clinical-grade retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells. These autologous RPE cells are surgically transplanted into the subretinal space to replace damaged or lost native RPE cells. By restoring the RPE layer, the therapy aims to provide essential metabolic and structural support to photoreceptors, potentially halting or reversing vision loss in patients with advanced AMD.
