Overview

Autologous keratinocyte suspension, primarily known by the brand name ReCell (developed by Avita Medical), is a point-of-care autologous cell therapy used for the treatment of acute thermal burns and skin defects. Unlike traditional cultured skin grafts, this system involves harvesting a small split-thickness skin biopsy from the patient, which is then enzymatically and mechanically processed at the bedside to create a non-cultured suspension of skin cells, including keratinocytes, melanocytes, fibroblasts, and Langerhans cells. This suspension is applied directly to the wound bed via spray or syringe, where it promotes rapid re-epithelialization and epidermal regeneration. The technology allows for a significant expansion ratio, enabling a small donor site to treat a much larger wound area (up to 1:80 ratio), thereby reducing the need for extensive skin grafting and improving cosmetic and functional outcomes.
