This investigational autologous cell therapy was developed by the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois (CHUV) in Switzerland for the treatment of skin graft donor site wounds. The therapy consists of a patient's own keratinocytes (epidermal skin cells) isolated from a small biopsy and subsequently suspended in autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP). When applied topically to a wound bed, the PRP acts as a biological scaffold and a source of essential growth factors and cytokines (such as PDGF, TGF-beta, and VEGF) that stimulate cellular proliferation and tissue repair. The keratinocytes provide the cellular basis for rapid re-epithelialization. Clinical evaluation in a Phase I trial demonstrated that this combination significantly accelerates the healing of split-thickness skin graft donor sites and reduces patient pain compared to standard paraffin gauze dressings.
