Overview

Autologous kidney-derived endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) are an experimental cell therapy developed by Brigham and Women's Hospital for the treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD). This therapy involves the isolation of progenitor cells from a patient's own kidney tissue, which are then expanded and delivered percutaneously into the renal vasculature. The therapeutic rationale is based on the hypothesis that these kidney-specific EPCs can transition to a reparative phenotype upon delivery, promoting endothelial repair and initiating differentiation programs to restore vascular integrity and function in the injured kidney. The treatment is primarily targeted at patients with CKD stage 3 or greater to slow or reverse the progression of renal damage.
