Overview

Autologous limbal progenitor cells is an advanced cell therapy and regenerative medicine product being developed by Fundació Clínic per a la Recerca Biomèdica for the treatment of unilateral severe limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD). The therapeutic process involves harvesting a small biopsy of sclero-corneal limbal tissue from the patient's healthy fellow eye, expanding the limbal progenitor and epithelial stem cells ex vivo on a human amniotic membrane scaffold, and subsequently transplanting the resulting cell sheet onto the diseased ocular surface. This approach aims to restore the limbal stem cell niche, promote corneal epithelial homeostasis, and rebuild corneal integrity to improve vision. The therapy is currently being evaluated in a Phase 2 clinical trial in Spain.
