Overview

Autologous limbal stromal stem cells (LSSCs) are a population of multipotent stem cells derived from the limbal stroma of the patient's own eye. These cells reside in the specialized niche of the limbus, located between the cornea and the sclera, and possess mesenchymal-like properties, including the ability to differentiate into functional keratocytes. LSSCs are being investigated for their potential to promote corneal regeneration and wound healing, particularly in cases of corneal ulcers or limbal stem cell deficiency. They function by restoring the corneal stroma and secreting immunomodulatory and trophic factors that support the overlying epithelium and inhibit scarring. Clinical studies, such as those conducted by Shanghai Tenth People's Hospital, evaluate the safety and efficacy of these autologous cells as a regenerative therapy for incurable ocular surface diseases.
