Overview

Autologous M2-like macrophages are an autologous cell therapy consisting of a patient's own peripheral blood monocytes differentiated ex vivo into an anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype. Developed by the Research Institute of Fundamental and Clinical Immunology in Russia, the cells are generated using a specific protocol involving GM-CSF and serum deprivation. These macrophages are characterized by high expression of M2-associated markers (CD206) and pro-apoptotic molecules (PD-L1, TRAIL, FasL), while exhibiting low production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. The therapy is primarily investigated for the treatment of severe cerebral palsy and other central nervous system injuries. Its therapeutic mechanism involves the modulation of neuroinflammation, stimulation of angiogenesis, and the secretion of various neurotrophic factors, including brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), which promote neural repair and protect neurons from apoptosis.
