Autologous melanocytes (Royan Institute) is a cell therapy developed by the Royan Institute for the treatment of stable vitiligo. The therapeutic process involves harvesting a small biopsy of healthy, pigmented skin from the patient, from which melanocytes are isolated and potentially expanded in vitro. These functional melanocytes are then transplanted back into the patient's depigmented vitiligo lesions, typically via direct epidermal injection or application to a dermabraded area. The goal of the treatment is to repopulate the affected skin with melanin-producing cells, thereby restoring natural skin pigmentation. This therapy has been evaluated in Phase 3 clinical trials to assess its long-term efficacy and safety in achieving stable repigmentation in patients whose disease has not progressed for at least six months.
