Autologous mesenchymal precursor cells (MPCs) are a cell-based biologic therapy developed by Mesoblast. These cells represent the earliest precursors of the mesenchymal cell lineage and are harvested directly from the patient (autologous) for therapeutic administration. In the context of the 'Angiogenesis II' safety and feasibility study, these cells were investigated for the treatment of patients with end-stage ischaemic heart disease and chronic myocardial ischaemia. The therapeutic mechanism involves the secretion of paracrine factors that exert anti-inflammatory and reparative effects, promote neovascularization, and modulate the balance between pro-inflammatory and reparative cardiac macrophage populations to facilitate myocardial tissue repair.
