Autologous mesenchymal progenitor stem cells (MSCs) are an investigational cell therapy consisting of a patient's own multipotent cells, typically harvested from bone marrow or adipose tissue. These cells are processed and expanded ex vivo before being re-administered to the patient, often via intra-articular injection for musculoskeletal conditions. The therapeutic rationale in arthrosis (osteoarthritis) relies on the cells' ability to modulate the local inflammatory environment, secrete regenerative growth factors, and potentially differentiate into chondrocytes to repair damaged cartilage. A specific Phase 2 clinical trial in Spain, conducted by the Clínica Universidad de Navarra, has evaluated these cells in comparison to platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to assess their efficacy in improving joint function and reducing pain in patients with knee osteoarthritis.
