Overview

Autologous mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent stromal cells harvested from a patient's own tissues, most commonly bone marrow or adipose tissue. These cells can differentiate into various cell types including osteoblasts, chondrocytes, myocytes, and adipocytes. In clinical use, autologous MSCs are isolated from the patient, processed (sometimes expanded ex vivo), and then reintroduced to promote tissue repair or modulate immune responses. Their mechanism of action is primarily through paracrine signaling—secreting bioactive molecules that modulate inflammation and stimulate endogenous repair processes. Autologous MSC therapy is being investigated for a wide range of conditions including orthopedic injuries (e.g., cartilage defects), autoimmune diseases (e.g., multiple sclerosis), graft-versus-host disease, and other degenerative or inflammatory disorders[2][3][5][6].
