This investigational cell therapy consists of autologous mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) developed and evaluated at Alzahra Hospital in Iran for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The therapy involves the isolation of MSCs from the patient's own tissue, which are then expanded and administered via intraspinal (intrathecal) injection. The mechanism of action is thought to involve the secretion of neurotrophic factors, immunomodulation, and anti-inflammatory effects, which collectively aim to slow the degeneration of motor neurons and improve functional outcomes. A Phase 1/2 clinical trial (NCT02116634) has been conducted to assess the safety and efficacy of this approach using scales such as the ALS Functional Rating Scale (ALS-FRS), electromyography (EMG), and forced vital capacity (FVC).
