Autologous mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are an investigational cell therapy developed by the Chinese PLA General Hospital for the treatment of diabetic foot and severe lower limb ischemia. The therapy involves the local transplantation of a patient's own MSCs into ischemic tissues. These cells are characterized by their multipotent differentiation potential, which allows them to differentiate into endothelial cells and contribute to the formation of new blood vessels, a process known as angiogenesis. By improving local blood flow and providing paracrine support for tissue regeneration, this MSC-based approach aims to alleviate the symptoms of peripheral artery disease and promote the healing of chronic ischemic ulcers in diabetic patients.
