Overview

This autologous mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy is an investigational biologic developed by the Cleveland Clinic for the treatment of relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS). The therapy involves the extraction of a patient's own bone marrow-derived MSCs, which are then culture-expanded ex vivo before being re-administered via intravenous infusion. The mechanism of action is hypothesized to involve immunomodulation and the paracrine release of soluble trophic factors that promote tissue protection and repair within the central nervous system. A Phase 1 pilot study (NCT00813969) led by Dr. Jeffrey Cohen demonstrated that the treatment is feasible, safe, and well-tolerated in patients with relapsing-remitting or secondary progressive MS, supporting further clinical investigation.
