Overview

This experimental cell therapy, developed by the Ministry of Public Health of the Republic of Belarus, utilizes autologous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for the treatment of drug-resistant symptomatic epilepsy. The therapeutic protocol involves a sequential administration: an initial intravenous infusion of ex vivo expanded, undifferentiated MSCs, followed approximately one week later by an intrathecal (endolumbal) injection of a portion of those cells that have undergone neural induction (neuroinduced MSCs). This dual approach aims to leverage the immunomodulatory and neuroprotective properties of MSCs to reduce seizure frequency and severity in patients who do not respond to standard anti-epileptic drugs. Clinical evaluation in a Phase I/II study (NCT02497443) demonstrated a favorable safety profile and potential anticonvulsant efficacy, with some patients achieving seizure remission.
