Overview

This investigational cell therapy, developed by the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology in India, consists of a combination of autologous hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for the treatment of decompensated liver cirrhosis. The therapy involves harvesting both cell types from the patient's bone marrow, expanding them in culture, and infusing them back into the patient. The mechanism of action relies on the immunomodulatory properties of MSCs, which produce factors like interleukin-10 (IL-10) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) to inhibit hepatic stellate cell activation, and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) to promote liver regeneration. The MSCs also create a favorable environment for the CD34+ HSCs to survive and potentially differentiate into hepatocytes, addressing the limitations of single-cell type therapies.
