Overview

Autologous mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are an investigational cell-based biologic therapy developed by The Methodist Hospital Research Institute for the prevention of rejection in living donor kidney transplant recipients. These cells are derived from the patient's own bone marrow and are expanded ex vivo before being re-infused. The therapy is designed to induce immune tolerance and suppress the T-cell and B-cell mediated immune responses that lead to graft rejection. In clinical development (notably the Phase 2 trial NCT03478215), these MSCs are administered as an adjunct to standard-of-care immunosuppressive regimens, including tacrolimus and mycophenolate mofetil, with the goal of improving long-term renal function and safety outcomes.
