Overview

Autologous microbiome transplant cream is a live biotherapeutic intervention developed by the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) for the treatment of atopic dermatitis. The therapy involves isolating a patient's own protective, antimicrobial-producing coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CoNS-AM+) species, such as *Staphylococcus epidermidis*, from their skin. These bacteria are selectively cultured and then incorporated into a moisturizer for topical reapplication. The mechanism of action relies on the ability of these commensal bacteria to produce antimicrobial peptides that specifically target and reduce the colonization of *Staphylococcus aureus*, thereby restoring a healthy skin microbiome and improving eczema symptoms.
