Overview

Autologous microfat, also known as micro-fragmented adipose tissue (MFAT), is a biological therapeutic derived from a patient's own adipose tissue, typically harvested via liposuction. The tissue undergoes mechanical fragmentation to reduce the size of fat clusters while preserving the structural integrity of the adipose niche and the viability of the stromal vascular fraction (SVF). This fraction contains a heterogeneous population of cells, including mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), pericytes, and endothelial cells, which remain embedded in their natural extracellular matrix. Unlike enzymatic digestion methods, mechanical fragmentation avoids the use of exogenous enzymes, maintaining the cells' regenerative and anti-inflammatory properties. Autologous microfat is primarily used in orthopedics for the treatment of degenerative conditions like osteoarthritis, where it is injected intra-articularly to provide mechanical support and release a secretome of growth factors and cytokines that promote tissue repair and modulate inflammation.
