Overview

Autologous microfragmented adipose tissue (MFAT) is a biological therapeutic derived from the patient's own adipose tissue through mechanical processing that preserves the vascular-stromal niche. Unlike enzymatic digestion, the microfragmentation process maintains the structural integrity of the tissue, including mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), pericytes, and the extracellular matrix. In the context of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) osteoarthritis, MFAT is harvested (specifically from the buccal fat pad in studies by Cairo University) and injected intra-articularly. It functions by providing a bioactive scaffold and a sustained release of trophic and anti-inflammatory factors that promote tissue repair, modulate the immune environment, and reduce joint pain and inflammation.
