Overview

This investigational autologous cell therapy for Parkinson's disease is being developed by Dr. Penelope J. Hallett and colleagues at McLean Hospital's Neuroregeneration Research Institute in collaboration with Mass General Brigham. The treatment involves a multi-step process where a patient's own blood cells are converted into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), which are then differentiated into specific midbrain dopaminergic neurons. These neurons are surgically transplanted into the putamen to replace the cells lost to disease-related degeneration. Because the therapy uses the patient's own biological material, it eliminates the need for long-term immunosuppressive treatments. The technology has been licensed to Oryon Cell Therapies and is currently being evaluated in a Phase 1/2a clinical trial to assess safety and preliminary efficacy in restoring dopamine production and signaling.
