Autologous muscle fiber fragments (MFFs) are a cell-based therapeutic product derived from a patient’s own skeletal muscle tissue, typically obtained via a biopsy from the inner thigh or vastus lateralis. These fragments contain viable muscle fibers and their associated satellite cells (myogenic precursors) within their natural extracellular matrix niche. The therapy is investigated for the treatment of conditions characterized by muscle weakness or tissue defects, most notably urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. The treatment involves harvesting the tissue, mechanically fragmenting it, and then delivering it to the target site—either through endoscopic injection into the bladder neck sphincter or by seeding it onto biodegradable scaffolds for surgical implantation. The primary mechanism of action involves the survival, proliferation, and differentiation of the transplanted satellite cells into new, functional muscle fibers that integrate with the host tissue to restore bulk, contractility, and biomechanical strength.
