Autologous muscle fiber injection is an experimental regenerative cell therapy developed by Herlev Hospital for the treatment of fecal incontinence, specifically in patients who have suffered obstetric anal sphincter rupture. The procedure involves harvesting skeletal muscle fibers from the patient's own leg, which are then fragmented and injected directly into the anal sphincter. This approach aims to utilize the regenerative potential of autologous muscle stem cells (satellite cells) present within the fibers to repair and strengthen the damaged sphincter muscle, thereby improving continence. It is typically evaluated in patients who remain symptomatic after conservative management, such as pelvic floor muscle training and dietary interventions.
