Overview

Autologous muscle progenitor cells (MPCs) are a cell-based therapy developed by Wake Forest University for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence (SUI), specifically targeting women with intrinsic sphincter deficiency. The therapeutic process involves harvesting skeletal muscle precursor cells from the patient's own quadriceps muscle via biopsy, followed by ex vivo expansion in culture. These expanded progenitor cells are then injected directly into the bladder neck or urinary sphincter complex. The mechanism of action relies on the cells' ability to integrate into the existing tissue, regenerate damaged or weakened muscle fibers, and restore the structural integrity and contractile function of the urinary sphincter. Clinical evaluation in a Phase 1 pilot study has demonstrated the safety and feasibility of this approach, showing improvements in symptom severity and quality of life.
