The autologous myeloid dendritic cell vaccine is an experimental, patient-specific therapeutic vaccine developed by the Infectious Diseases team at Hospital Clínic de Barcelona (IDIBAPS/HIVACAT program). This cell-based biologic consists of monocyte-derived myeloid dendritic cells (MD-DCs) isolated from the patient and pulsed ex vivo with high doses of heat-inactivated whole autologous HIV-1 virus. As professional antigen-presenting cells, these mature dendritic cells are re-administered to the patient to stimulate HIV-1-specific cellular (T lymphocyte) and humoral immune responses. The primary goal of this immunotherapy is to achieve virologic control in patients with early-stage chronic HIV-1 infection, potentially reducing or eliminating the need for lifelong combination antiretroviral therapy (cART).
