Autologous myeloma cells refers to the patient's own myeloma (plasma tumor) cells, most commonly used in the context of immunotherapy or as a cellular vaccine to induce an immune response against multiple myeloma. The mechanistic approach generally involves isolating the cancerous plasma (myeloma) cells from a patient, sometimes altering or combining them with adjuvants (such as dendritic cells or cytokines), and then re-infusing the modified cells or their constituents to stimulate an anti-myeloma immune response. The most widely-used cell-based therapy in myeloma is autologous stem cell transplantation; however, "autologous myeloma cells" as a specific therapy usually refers to an experimental immunotherapy approach, not the standard transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells[1][3]. Mechanisms of action are variable depending on the specific therapeutic design (e.g., whole-cell vaccine, cell-pulsed dendritic cells), but the common principle is to trigger the patient’s immune system to recognize and destroy residual or recurrent malignant plasma cells. This approach remains largely investigational and is not a standard, approved pharmaceutical product or biological drug for myeloma[1][3].
