Overview

Autologous myoblasts are a type of cell therapy derived from a patient's own skeletal muscle satellite cells. These cells are harvested via biopsy (often from the quadriceps or sternocleidomastoid), expanded in vitro, and then transplanted back into the patient to repair or strengthen damaged muscle tissue. The therapy has been investigated for a wide range of conditions, including ischemic cardiomyopathy (where they are injected into the myocardium or applied as a cell sheet to improve cardiac function via paracrine effects), oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy (to treat dysphagia and ptosis), and various forms of urinary and fecal incontinence (to reinforce sphincteric function). Because the therapy uses the patient's own cells, it minimizes the risk of immunological rejection.
