This investigational cell therapy, developed by the University Medical Centre Ljubljana, consists of autologous skeletal muscle-derived cells (aSMDC), specifically myoblasts, for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence (SUI) in women. The therapy involves harvesting a biopsy from the patient's own biceps muscle, followed by the isolation and cultivation of myoblasts. These cells are then administered via ultrasound-guided transurethral injection into the external urethral sphincter. The treatment protocol often incorporates postoperative functional electrical stimulation (FES) to promote cell integration and enhance the restoration of sphincter function. Clinical studies have indicated that the procedure is safe and feasible, providing long-term improvement in patients with intrinsic urinary sphincter deficiency.
