Autologous nasal mucosal epithelial cell sheet is an investigational regenerative medicine product consisting of a cultured layer of the patient's own nasal epithelial cells. The therapy is designed for use in middle ear surgery, specifically for patients with middle ear cholesteatoma or adhesive otitis media. To create the sheet, a small sample of nasal mucosa is harvested from the patient and cultured on temperature-responsive culture inserts, which allow the cells to be detached as a continuous, intact sheet without the need for proteolytic enzymes like trypsin. During surgery (such as tympanoplasty), this cell sheet is transplanted into the middle ear cavity to promote the regeneration of a functional mucosal lining. This prevents the formation of postoperative adhesions and helps maintain an aerated middle ear space, ultimately aiming to improve hearing outcomes and reduce recurrence rates. The development of this technology is led by researchers at the Jikei University School of Medicine.
