Overview

Autologous Neural Cell Ecosystems (ANCE) is an experimental cell therapy consisting of a primary culture of adult human brain cells derived from a patient's own cortical biopsy. The ecosystem is composed of a diverse suspension of neural cells, including astrocytes, proliferative progenitor cells, and quiescent progenitors. Developed primarily at the University Hospital of Lausanne (CHUV), ANCE is designed to treat central nervous system injuries, such as ischemic stroke, by reimplanting these cultured cells into the site of the lesion. The therapeutic goal is to replace destroyed neurons and provide a supportive cellular environment that facilitates neuroplasticity and functional recovery. Because the cells are autologous, the approach avoids the ethical concerns and immunological rejection associated with fetal or allogeneic neural grafts.
