Autologous neural stem cells (NSCs) represent a personalized regenerative medicine approach for treating central nervous system disorders. These cells are typically isolated from a patient's own brain tissue—often obtained during necessary neurosurgical procedures—and are subsequently expanded and characterized in a laboratory setting. The therapeutic rationale involves the transplantation of these multipotent cells back into the patient to promote neurorestoration through several mechanisms: direct differentiation into neurons, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes to replace lost cells; the secretion of paracrine factors such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) to support endogenous cell survival; and the modulation of the inflammatory environment. The PLA 306th Hospital is currently conducting research to establish a standardized platform for the isolation and maintenance of these cells, targeting indications including traumatic brain injury, cerebral hemorrhage, and epilepsy.
