Overview

Autologous neural stem cells (NSCs) are a cell-based therapeutic modality involving the isolation, expansion, and transplantation of a patient's own neural progenitor cells back into the central nervous system. This approach is primarily investigated for neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. The therapeutic rationale is based on the ability of these cells to differentiate into functional neurons and glia, provide neurotrophic support through the secretion of factors like BDNF and GDNF, and modulate the neuroinflammatory microenvironment. By using autologous cells, the risk of immune rejection is minimized compared to allogeneic stem cell sources. Clinical studies, such as those conducted by The Affiliated Hospital of Xuzhou Medical University, evaluate the safety and potential for functional recovery following intracranial or intrathecal administration.
