Autologous non-activated platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a biologic therapy derived from a patient's own blood, processed via centrifugation to concentrate platelets and their associated growth factors. Unlike conventional PRP preparations that are artificially pre-activated with substances like thrombin or calcium chloride, the 'non-activated' form allows platelets to release their contents naturally upon contact with tissue collagen. This release includes potent growth factors such as PDGF, TGF-β, VEGF, and EGF, which promote tissue regeneration, angiogenesis, and wound healing. It is currently being evaluated by Geneva University Hospitals in the RELIEVE trial for the treatment of postpartum perineal pain following episiotomies or perineal tears.
