Overview

This investigational cell therapy consists of autologous, non-expanded adipose-derived stem cells harvested from a patient's own fat tissue via liposuction. Developed by the Instituto de Investigación Hospital Universitario La Paz, the therapy is designed to treat complex and treatment-resistant perianal fistulae, including those associated with Crohn's disease and cryptoglandular origins. Unlike expanded stem cell products, these cells are administered directly after processing without an intermediate culture expansion phase. The cells are injected intralesionally into the fistula tract, often in combination with fibrin glue, where they are thought to exert immunomodulatory and regenerative effects to promote tissue healing and closure of the fistula while sparing the anal sphincter to prevent incontinence.
