Autologous non-expanded adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) are a cell-based regenerative therapy used for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. The therapy involves the extraction of adipose tissue from a patient via lipoaspiration, followed by minimal processing (mechanical or enzymatic) to isolate the stromal vascular fraction (SVF) containing mesenchymal stem cells, which are then injected directly into the intra-articular space of the affected joint. Unlike cultured cell products, these cells are not expanded in vitro, which reduces regulatory complexity and maintains the cells' natural microenvironment. The therapeutic effect is attributed to the cells' ability to secrete immunomodulatory factors, reduce inflammation, and potentially promote chondroprotection and tissue repair within the osteoarthritic environment.
