Overview

This therapy is a combination cellular immunotherapy involving the infusion of two types of T lymphocyte populations derived from either the patient (autologous) or a genetically identical donor (syngeneic): - Peripheral blood T lymphocytes, which are collected from the patient's or donor's bloodstream. - Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs), which are expanded in vitro to specifically target and kill cells infected with EBV, including certain cancer cells such as those in post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders and some EBV-associated malignancies. The mechanism involves direct immune-mediated killing of malignant or virally infected cells by both general and virus-specific cytotoxic activity. This approach is a form of adoptive cell therapy designed to enhance antitumor immunity by providing large numbers of effector immune cells capable of recognizing tumor antigens and/or viral proteins[1][4]. The therapy may be used experimentally for cancers associated with EBV infection, such as certain lymphomas.
