This autologous cell therapy consists of a sheet of epithelial cells cultured from a patient's own oral mucosal tissue. Developed by He Eye Hospital, it is designed to treat limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD), a condition where the loss of stem cells at the edge of the cornea leads to corneal opacity and vision loss. By transplanting these oral mucosal epithelial stem cells onto the ocular surface, the therapy aims to reconstruct the corneal epithelium and restore visual function. This approach is particularly useful for patients with bilateral LSCD where healthy limbal tissue is unavailable for autografting.
