Overview

Autologous periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) are a specific population of mesenchymal stem cells harvested from a patient's own periodontal ligament, typically obtained from extracted teeth (such as third molars). These cells possess the unique capacity for self-renewal and multi-lineage differentiation into cementoblasts, osteoblasts, and fibroblasts. In clinical application, these cells are expanded ex vivo and then transplanted back into the patient's periodontal defects, often in combination with a scaffold or carrier like bovine-derived bone minerals or collagen matrices. Their primary therapeutic goal is the regeneration of the functional periodontal attachment apparatus—including new cementum, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone—which is typically lost due to inflammatory diseases like periodontitis.
