Overview

This investigational cell therapy consists of autologous CD34+ hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells harvested from a patient's own peripheral blood and subsequently implanted intracerebrally into the brain. Developed by China Medical University Hospital, the therapy is specifically evaluated for the treatment of chronic stroke, particularly middle cerebral artery (MCA) infarction. The biological mechanism involves the promotion of angiogenesis and the potential reorganization of the vascular network in the peri-infarct area, which is intended to facilitate neurological recovery. Clinical evaluation has progressed through a Phase II randomized controlled trial (NCT00950521), which assessed the efficacy of brain transplants of these cells combined with conventional antiplatelet therapy in adult patients with chronic MCA infarction.
