Autologous peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) are an investigational cell therapy being evaluated for the treatment of acute myocardial infarction. The therapy involves the isolation of mononuclear cells from a patient's own venous peripheral blood, typically via density gradient centrifugation. These cells are then infused into the infarct-related artery shortly after primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The goal is to improve left ventricular function and prevent heart failure by promoting myocardial repair, potentially through mechanisms such as paracrine signaling, angiogenesis, or modulation of the inflammatory response. This approach was notably investigated in the HEBE trial, a multicenter randomized study sponsored by the Interuniversity Cardiology Institute of the Netherlands.
