This therapeutic approach is a combination of cell therapy and cytokine therapy investigated for the treatment of **relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS)**. The procedure involves the *ex vivo* incubation of a patient's own **peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs)**—including lymphocytes and monocytes—with **interferon tau (IFN-tau)**. Interferon tau is a Type I interferon originally identified in ruminants (as a trophoblast interferon) that possesses potent immunomodulatory activity with significantly lower systemic toxicity and antiviral side effects compared to interferon beta. When PBMCs are treated with IFN-tau, they undergo a phenotypic shift, typically characterized by the induction of regulatory cell populations and a transition from a pro-inflammatory Th1 cytokine profile to an anti-inflammatory Th2/Th3 profile. Upon re-infusion into the patient, these modulated cells are intended to suppress the autoimmune response directed against the myelin sheath in the central nervous system.
