Overview

Autologous peripheral blood stem cell refers to the use of a patient’s own blood-forming (hematopoietic) stem cells collected from their bloodstream (peripheral blood) for transplantation. In this procedure, the patient's own stem cells are harvested—typically after mobilization with growth factors such as G-CSF—and stored. The patient then undergoes high-dose chemotherapy or radiation therapy to destroy diseased or cancerous bone marrow. Afterward, the stored autologous peripheral blood stem cells are infused back into the patient to restore bone marrow function and reconstitute normal hematopoiesis. This approach is primarily used in treating hematological malignancies such as multiple myeloma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma, and certain leukemias; it is also being explored for some autoimmune diseases like systemic sclerosis and multiple sclerosis[2][4][5][6][7][8][9]. The main advantage of using autologous cells is eliminating risks of graft-versus-host disease and immune incompatibility.
