Overview

Autologous peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) rescue is a cell therapy protocol utilized at the Masonic Cancer Center, University of Minnesota, for the treatment of high-risk neuroblastoma. The procedure involves the infusion of a patient's own hematopoietic stem cells, which are collected prior to the administration of myeloablative high-dose chemotherapy (typically involving agents like carboplatin, etoposide, and melphalan). The primary objective of the infusion is to "rescue" the patient's hematopoietic system by facilitating bone marrow reconstitution and accelerating the recovery of white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. This protocol is employed as a standard of care for pediatric patients who are ineligible for Children's Oncology Group (COG) clinical trials.
