Overview

Autologous plasma exosome eye drops are an experimental biologic therapy being investigated for the treatment of moderate to severe dry eye syndrome (DES), particularly in patients refractory to conventional treatments. The therapy involves the isolation of exosomes—nanometer-sized extracellular vesicles—from the patient's own peripheral blood plasma. These vesicles are enriched with a complex cargo of growth factors, anti-inflammatory cytokines, and microRNAs that facilitate intercellular communication and promote tissue repair. When applied topically to the eye, these exosomes are intended to suppress ocular surface inflammation, enhance corneal epithelial healing, and restore tear film stability. As an autologous product, it offers the advantage of high biocompatibility and a reduced risk of adverse immunological reactions. Clinical evaluation is currently being led by institutions such as the Eye Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University.
