Autologous platelet concentrate + autologous thrombin is a biologic therapy made from a patient’s own (autologous) blood, in which platelets are concentrated by centrifugation (platelet-rich plasma, PRP) and then activated by autologous thrombin to form a gel or coagulum. Upon activation, platelets degranulate, rapidly releasing growth factors such as platelet-derived growth factor, transforming growth factor-β, vascular endothelial growth factor, and epidermal growth factor, which mediate cell recruitment, proliferation, extracellular matrix synthesis, and healing. The coagulated matrix (combining PRP and autologous thrombin) serves as both a reservoir for growth factors and a natural scaffold for tissue regeneration. This combination is used mainly as a topical or injectable therapy for tissue regeneration and wound healing, including for chronic wounds, musculoskeletal injuries, dental and oral procedures, and reconstructive or aesthetic indications. Devices for preparation (not the therapy itself) are FDA-cleared under the 510(k) pathway for use at point of care.
