Overview

Autologous platelet gel (APG) is a biologic therapy prepared at the point of care using a patient's own blood, specifically utilizing the Medtronic Magellan Autologous Platelet Separator System. The process involves concentrating platelets from platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and activating them with autologous thrombin to form a bioactive gel. This gel is applied topically to wound sites to deliver a high concentration of naturally occurring growth factors and cytokines, such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). These factors promote accelerated tissue healing, angiogenesis, and epithelialization. The therapy was notably evaluated in the PAWS (Platelets in Acute Wounds) pilot study, which demonstrated faster closure rates in acute punch biopsy wounds when platelet concentrations exceeded six times the baseline levels.
