Overview

Autologous platelet gel (APG) is a biologic therapy prepared from a patient's own blood, specifically concentrated platelets, which are activated with calcium and thrombin to form a gel. Developed by researchers at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, it is designed to enhance wound healing and reduce the incidence of surgical site infections, particularly in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery. The gel releases a high concentration of growth factors, such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), which stimulate cellular processes essential for tissue repair and regeneration at the surgical site. This therapy is prepared at the point of care during surgery using specialized separation systems.
